Family law

Family law governs interactions between individuals related to each other by family or marriage ties and the disputes that may come between them.

Be they married, cohabiting legally or in a common-law marriage, separation partners can be a touchy situation in which various issues arise. These may pertain to :

  • Relations between the partners themselves.
  • Authority and accommodation schemes for the children.
  • Financial aspects such as the assessment of childcare (contribution to the child’s education) and maintenance (both during the union and after divorce).
  • Property aspects such as liquidation of marital property and what is to be done with buildings acquired jointly.

Family law also pertains to succession law, including any potential opposition at the time an estate is divided among the heirs.

Questions dealing with establishing parentage on the father’s or mother’s side in situations of separation or single parenthood (medically assisted parenthood, surrogate motherhood) are also considered.
